Dumpster Weight Calculators

Calculators for Shingles & Concrete Disposal

Use Legacy Dumpster Rentals dumpster weight calculator to estimate roofing shingles or concrete before choosing a dumpster. Enter a few project details, review the estimated weight, and use the result as a starting point for planning your rental.

Your Roofing & Shingle Weight Calculator Guide

Use the calculators below to get a quick estimate before loading or booking a dumpster. These calculators are meant to give you a ballpark figure. Actual debris weight can vary based on material type, moisture, density, hidden layers, rebar, dirt, and mixed materials.

Here’s a quick guide on how to use them:

Fill in The Blanks

Pop in the details about your waste into the calculator. It only takes a few quick pieces of information to get started.

Hit “Calculate”

After you’ve entered your details, press the button to get your estimate. You’ll see how much your waste may weigh in pounds, along with a suggested dumpster size.

Review Your Estimate

Use the estimate to help choose the right dumpster size for your project. If you are unsure which size to choose, reach out to us. Our team at Legacy Dumpster Rentals can help you compare the material, weight, and dumpster options before you book.

How Much Do Shingle Bundles Weigh?

When planning a roofing tear-off, knowing the estimated shingle weight can help you choose the right dumpster size before the project starts. Use the roofing dumpster rental calculator below as a starting point, especially if your roof has more than one layer of shingles.

It is important to check for double-layering. Sometimes roofs have more than one layer of shingles if they were re-roofed without removing the old layer. Make sure to check how many layers there are before using the shingle weight calculator.

Weight Of Shingle Bundles

Three-Tab Asphalt Shingles:

These bundles weigh about 60 to 80 pounds each. You’ll need three bundles to cover one square, which equals 100 square feet of roofing. That makes the total weight for one square about 180 to 240 pounds.

Architectural Asphalt Shingles:

These are a bit heavier, usually weighing about 70 to 80 pounds per bundle.

Slate Shingles:

These are much heavier, with each bundle often weighing between 250 and 350 pounds.

To figure out which dumpster size you may need for roofing debris, use Legacy Dumpster Rentals’ roofing dumpster rental calculator.

How To Figure Out The Weight Of Concrete

When you need to dispose of concrete, the weight matters just as much as the amount of space it takes up. Use the concrete weight calculator to estimate your load based on square footage and slab thickness.

Concrete weight can change based on thickness, total area, and material type. Concrete with metal rebar can weigh more than plain concrete. Concrete with dirt, oil, or mixed material can also affect the final weight.

When concrete is broken up, it leaves gaps in the dumpster, so broken concrete usually weighs less per cubic yard than solid concrete. Crushed or broken concrete is often estimated at around 3,000 pounds per cubic yard, or about 112 pounds per cubic foot.

Average Concrete Weight

A cubic yard of solid concrete is about 4,000 pounds, or roughly 2 tons. That works out to around 150 pounds per cubic foot.

Use Legacy Dumpster Rentals’ concrete weight calculator to estimate your load and choose a better dumpster option for your project.

What a Calculator Can and Cannot Tell You

Think of a dumpster weight calculator as a planning tool, not a final weigh-in. It can help you choose a better starting size, compare estimated weight to included tonnage, and think through whether heavy materials should be kept separate.

A calculator can help with:

  • Cost Planning: Compare estimated weight to included tonnage.
  • Dumpster Sizing: Avoid choosing based only on space.
  • Material Sorting: Keep heavy debris separate when needed.
  • Better Calls: Share useful details when asking for help.

A calculator cannot promise the final landfill scale weight. That number depends on the real load after pickup.

Why Knowing Your Load’s Weight Matters

A dumpster with the website legacydumpster.com on the back is parked in a parking lot.

At Legacy Dumpster Rentals, dumpster weight capacity is just as important as dumpster size. A 10-yard dumpster may be a good fit for lighter debris like branches, but heavy materials like concrete, brick, dirt, plaster, gravel, or sand can reach the weight limit much faster.

For heavy materials, we recommend the 6-yard dumpster or 12-yard dumpster designed for heavy loads like concrete, brick, dirt, plaster, gravel, and sand.

Different Materials, Different Weights

A dumpster may still have open space but already be close to its weight limit. Knowing what you are tossing helps you choose a dumpster based on both size and weight.

Overage Costs

The cost to dump at the landfill is based on weight. If your dumpster is over the included tonnage, you’ll pay the prorated cost for the additional weight. Picking the right dumpster size and watching the estimated weight can help reduce the risk of an added weight charge.

A Quick Note Before You Load

Not everything belongs in a dumpster, even if it physically fits. Paint, chemicals, batteries, used oil, propane, fluorescent bulbs, and some unwanted medication may need special handling through Sedgwick County’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility.

Bulky items like tires, appliances, wood waste, and brush may also have separate disposal rules or added fees. Before loading anything questionable, check local disposal guidance or ask us so problem items can be sorted before pickup.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How accurate is a dumpster weight calculator?

The most common dumpster rental size we provide at Legacy Dumpster is the versatile 20 yard dumpster. It is ideal for a wide range of projects, both residential and commercial, with the capacity to manage up to 8 pickup truck loads.

  • How does a roofing dumpster calculator work?

The largest roll-off dumpster available from Legacy Dumpster is the 40 yard container.  It is suitable for large construction projects and extensive cleanouts, offering unparalleled capacity.

  • How many squares of shingles fit in a 15-yard dumpster?

For a 15-yard dumpster, it depends on:

    • The shingle type
    • Number of layers
    • Included weight allowance

Three-tab shingles are lighter than slate, and a roof with two layers can add much more weight. Use the roofing calculator first, then call to confirm the estimated load before booking.

  • Why can concrete hit the weight limit before the dumpster is full?

Yes, some items have added fees.

    • Mattresses and Box Springs: $25 each.

    Tires: $10 each.

    Appliances with Freon: $100 each.

Construction Debris Loads: These extra item fees are doubled for construction debris dumpsters.

  • Can I mix shingles, concrete, and household junk?

You should ask before mixing materials. Heavy debris and household junk may have different weight, disposal, and pricing rules. Call Legacy Dumpster Rentals before loading if you are unsure what can go together.

  • Do I need a special dumpster for concrete, dirt, or brick?

Heavy materials like concrete, dirt, brick, gravel, sand, and plaster may need a dumpster designed for heavy loads. Legacy Dumpster Rentals often recommends a 6-yard or 12-yard dumpster for these materials.
